Between Marie Wilkes and You

November 16 at 11:48pm

I'm up to a few things with a queer question.

Some of it's artmaking.

And some of it's a memo/report for the Iowa Arts Council.

The council had an interesting moment recently when one panel reported they were:

"Bothered by the use of the term "queer" in the application - one panelist didn't understand it wasn't derogatory."

Here's the use:

"... projects create community and visibility by working with various groups labeled Diverse or Underserved: Women, children, seniors, Latinos, African-Americans, LGBT/Queer, to name a few."

Any thoughts on Queer for the memo?

Mark

Hi Mark!

Here are my belated thoughts. It depends who you are hanging with. . . the term Queer when used by a straight person in the company of non-intimates (be they gay or straight) could be confused as derogatory. I think it may be a PC overreaction that is supported by some "information on being gay for straights" literature that is commonly read by folks these days. I could dig around to find more exacting sitings for this if you want. . .

You know my family. Frankly it is easier for me to use the term Queer to cover everyone dear to me in one word rather than a run-on sentence. I don't think that I, as a straight white middle-age girl, have ever offended my familiars with the use of this term. I have not used it casually, though, with folks I don't know.

What has your feedback been from people so far?

Thanks Marie!
You're Fabulous!

I'm gathering feedback and posting it at
thoughtsonqueer.blogspot.com
(or I will by February)

I'll add yours if that works for you.

Would you like to be on the Straight Advisory Board for Queer Iowa Artists?

queeriowaartists.blogspot.com is a resource list of LBGT-etc artists working in Iowa and what services they're offing to Iowans.

Various straight folk are being advisors in their areas of expertise. For LGBT_Qs in Iowa. And for straight Iowans who might like to ask a question or two about Q-GLBT(xyz) folks.

Thanks for all you do for the gay-lesbian community. I always love your marching in the Pride parade!
